Sunsetting Technic Launcher

If you’ve been around for a while, you probably remember when Technic was a solid – and actually our only – option. But times have changed, and things have moved on.

Where things stand

I’ve been closely watching where players are coming from, and the numbers speak for themselves:

CurseForge is still the biggest, powering about 75% of our players. Modrinth has grown fast, jumping from 15% to 25% since the start of 2025. Technic Launcher, on the other hand, dropped from ~10% to less than 2% of users today.

This is even more visible when separating the charts:

At this point, Technic is barely used, and for good reason.

Why Technic no longer makes sense

Over time, the Technic Launcher has fallen behind:

  • Dated look and unpolished experience
  • No version management at all
  • Players can’t create their own or customize packs easily
  • Problematic copyright handling; requiring full redistribution of all mods, which puts creators in a tough spot

So, what’s happening?

With so few players using Technic and better options readily available, I’ve made the decision to stop maintaining our Technic build. Here’s what this means in practice:

  • The Technic modpack will remain listed for now
  • If you have it installed, it won't be removed
  • But new downloads of the modpack will fail

What we recommend

Switch to Modrinth or CurseForge. These platforms offer real benefits for players, like the ability to create and customize modpacks, which might not sound that important, but will change the way you’ll play Minecraft modpacks from here on out.
